Crochet Stars: Step-by-step

I came across this pattern post for crocheted stars on A Foothill Home Companion via One Sheepish Girl and thought I'd give it a go. Until recently I've been pretty terrible at following crochet patterns but I found YouTube videos have really helped - seeing how stitches are formed and knowing I've got it right is really useful!
So I worked through this one, translating US crochet terms to UK ones in my head and squinting at the pictures when I wasn't sure and it worked out alright. Then I thought it might be useful for people to have a step-by-step guide and possibly a UK translation of the pattern. So I made another little star and took photos along the way.

Click through to see the rest of this post. The photos made it rather long so I thought I'd better put a jump in here :)

I'm using some random (probably cotton) crochet thread I got in a big mixed bag at a charity shop and a teeny tiny hook which came in a big collection of knitting needles from a lovely lady on Flickr.
Just to be clear, I make no claim of crocheting anything right and do not own any rights to this pattern. I believe it's a pretty general method of constructing a star. If you have any technical queries they're probably best directed over this way.

Chain 5, join with slip stitch to form ring.

Chain 3

Now make 14 treble crochet in the ring.

Halfway there!

Lovely, now slip stitch to 3rd chain of chain 3 to form circle.

There's the slip stitch.

* Chain 5.

1 double crochet in 2nd chain

1 half treble crochet in next chain.

1 treble crochet in next chain.

1 double treble crochet in next chain.

Skip 2 treble crochet (on ring), slip stitch in next treble crochet.

Now repeat from * four times to give five points.
Fasten off & weave in ends.

Optional: add yarn to hang it by.

Hang up and admire :)

Instructions: (adapted & converted to UK notation)

Materials: Crochet thread, size 30. Crochet hook, size 10. (3.25mm I think that's a UK/Canadian size anyway, there's a conversion chart here)

Step 1: Chain 5, join with slip stitch to form ring.

Step 2. Chain 3. 14 treble crochet in ring. Slip stitch to 3rd chain of chain 3 to form circle.

Step 3: * Chain 5. 1 double crochet in 2nd chain, 1 half treble crochet in next chain, 1 treble crochet in next chain, 1 double treble crochet in next chain. Skip 2 treble crochet (on ring), slip stitch in next treble crochet. * Repeat from * to * four more times to create five points, ending with slip stitch at base of first point. Fasten off and weave in ends
(Mine has a bit of a hole in, I think my chain 3 may have been loose. Oh well.)
